"Jeff Lewis stepped up and made some plays when he had to," said Broncos coach Mike Shanahan. "You always look for a quarterback, who when things break down, he can find a way to move the football."

The bad news for the Broncos: Tory James, the Broncos projected starting right cornerback, tore his left patella tendon in his right knee. He is expected to miss the entire season.

The Bad news for the Bills: Alex Van Pelt went down with a seperated shoulder. He is expected to miss 6-8 weeks.

The Bills lone touchdown came when Antowain Smith ran 31 yards for the score with 12:56 left in the second quarter. Smith carried 8 times for 52 yards.

As far as the Bills quarterback situation, Todd Collins seems to be taking the early lead over Billy Joe Hobert. Collins went 5-9 for 63 yards while Hobert went 3-10 for 62 yards. Jim Ballard played the last quarter and a half going 10-20 for 143 yards and an interception.

"As quarterback, you're never satisfied," Collins said. "I thought I threw the ball pretty accurately, with the exception of some deep balls, where we had some miscommunications."
